An ardent champion of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Joolfoo is a trained engineer, a lecturer at the University of Mauritius and an active participant in various civic initiatives. He served as a Project Director and Vice President of Junior Chamber International (JCI) Quatre Bornes and as co-lead at the Workers Right Act — Youngsters project.
As co-leader of Workers Right Act — Youngsters, a civic organization engaged in community-based training and advocacy for workers’ rights, especially first-time workers, Joolfoo and his team works tirelessly to educate first-time workers about their rights as employees. “As part of the project management team, I lead field teams to understand the real challenges facing young people in their places of work and raise awareness around ways to address these challenges.”
Joolfoo is also a passionate advocate for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and works tirelessly as a volunteer for technology and start-up companies that are developing innovative solutions to combat poverty and hunger at the grassroots level. Their efforts revolve around optimizing crop yields by utilizing IOT technologies to overcome climatic and seasonal pressures on agriculture, thereby reducing hunger and enhancing food security at the household level.
For Joolfoo, the most significant change that resulted from his participation in the YALI program is the profound transformation in his leadership capabilities and the broadening of his perspective. “During the program’s civic leadership track, I had the privilege of learning from exceptional trainers who equipped me with essential skills in sustainability, Human-Centered Design Thinking, Self-Leadership, and Organizational Leadership. The exposure to diverse African perspectives and experiences expanded my international network, connecting me with passionate change-makers from over 13 African countries.”
According to Joolfoo, participating in this opportunity helped hone his project ideas on a global level, making them more impactful and sustainable. The experience also boosted his confidence in his leadership abilities and taught him how to tailor his message to different audiences. Currently, Joolfoo collaborates with alumni from various African countries to implement an innovative solution to address food insecurity in climate change-affected areas.
“While I have been passionate about civic matters from an early age, I faced significant hurdles. For instance, I lacked the necessary leadership skills to effectively manage and lead a diverse team. I also had a very limited network outside of my country and community and was looking for ways to broaden my work beyond my immediate environment.”
Another collaborative project he has been working on aimed at addressing SDGs 1 and 2, is nearing completion, and he is actively seeking sponsorship to invest in its implementation.
“We have established collaborative networks with alumni in different YALI cohorts where we share ideas and work together to drive positive change in our communities. I am proud to say that YALI RLC-SA has been instrumental in transforming my passion into effective action. It has empowered me to make a meaningful impact on the lives of individuals and communities in Africa, bringing us one step closer to achieving a more sustainable and equitable future.”
