ONE SONG AT A TIME
#YALIRLCSA Usiphatheleni Khanyile Education Changemakers Cohort 1 Alumnus is a Geography teacher at Sibusisiwe Comprehensive Technical High School in Durban. South Africa instituted a lockdown to contain further spread of COVID-19. This resulted in mass school closures which Usiphatheleni says interrupted the normal flow of learning and teaching in the country. Usiphatheleni has however risen above the temporary hurdle of teaching and lesson delivery by creating a virtual Geography class. Initially he created a WhatsApp group to cater only for the classes he taught but was soon inundated with requests from learners in other classes to join the virtual classes. He moved to create a Facebook page and then later a YouTube channel enabling him to reach a bigger audience and accommodate increasing requests.
In the YouTube videos, Usiphatheleni shares important Geography content with Grade 12 learners, helping them to continue their learning from home.
He intends to make the content on his YouTube channel more informative and interesting by delivering Geography content through song.
Usiphatheleni notes that high data prices remain a real challenge for some of his students and hopes that calls to zero rate learning and teaching websites will be heeded by telecommunication companies in the country.
