When South Africa instituted the lockdown in March 2020 to curb the spread of COVID-19, the unintended consequence of this measure was a spike in Gender Based Violence (GBV) cases across the country. As a result, Mpolokeng Mudau, a life coach and YALI RLC-SA Alumnus embarked on a GBV awareness campaign through her organization, Ntsikayezwe Development Foundation.

As part of her campaign, she hosted a luncheon for women and children in GaMalatjie, Klerksdorp to commemorate and celebrate Nelson Mandela Day in July. She shared inspiring messages and lessons from Mandela’s life in support of women and girls rights by reaffirming one of his iconic messages which reads “as long as women are bound by poverty and as long as they are looked down upon, human rights will lack substance”.

In August, Mpolokeng hosted a 5-part online series titled Bekezela Ntombazane, to encourage women to resist a culture of silence and the urge to be patient in abusive relationships. During the online series, she interviewed six women who shared their GBV experiences. Her efforts attracted over 4000 participants who engaged in insightful discussions on women’s struggles in South Africa. They touched on a number of topics including emotional abuse, religious institutional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, patriarchy, financial abuse, cultural abuse and psychological abuse.

Recordings of Bekezela Ntombazane are available on Mpolokeng- The Coach Facebook page.
